Most drivers find out their battery is dead the hard way — a cold morning, a turn of the key, and nothing but a click. The good news is that a failing battery almost always drops hints first. Catch one of these seven signs early and a quick, free load test can tell you whether you need a new battery or just a clean and charge.
1Slow or Sluggish Engine Crank
If turning the key or pressing start makes the engine crank noticeably slower than usual — a "rrrr-rrrr" instead of a quick catch — that's usually the first sign a battery is losing its charge capacity. It's especially common on the first cold start of the day, when the battery has to work hardest.
2Dashboard Battery Warning Light
Modern cars will flag a charging system issue with a battery-shaped icon on the dashboard. It doesn't always mean the battery itself is bad — sometimes it's the alternator — but either way, it means the electrical system needs a check before it leaves you stranded.
3Corroded or Crusty Terminals
A white, blue, or greenish crust building up around the battery terminals is corrosion — it restricts the connection and can mimic the symptoms of a dying battery even if the battery itself is fine. Left uncleaned for long enough, though, it does shorten the battery's working life.
4Swollen or Misshapen Battery Case
Extreme heat — something Lahore summers deliver reliably — can cause a battery case to swell or bulge. A swollen case is a sign of internal damage from overcharging or heat stress, and a battery in this condition should be replaced immediately rather than waited out.
5Dim Headlights and Weak Electronics
Headlights that look noticeably dimmer than normal, power windows that move sluggishly, or an infotainment system that resets itself are all signs the battery isn't holding enough charge to run the car's electronics properly, especially at idle.
6A Battery Older Than 2–3 Years
Even a battery with no obvious symptoms is living on borrowed time once it passes the two-to-three-year mark in daily Lahore driving conditions — heat shortens battery life faster than cold does. If you can't remember when yours was last replaced, that's worth checking on its own.
7A Rotten-Egg Smell Near the Engine Bay
A sulfur-like smell around the battery usually means it's leaking or venting gas internally — a sign of overcharging or a damaged cell. Treat this one as urgent: ventilate the area, avoid sparks or flames nearby, and get the battery inspected right away.
